It is a unique, computer-generated code that serves as an authorization, transposing the old-style keys that were used in conventional passwords. Keys are still used in digital signatures to provide security, but with digital signatures, the keys need not be copied and stored on computers in the form of files or folders. Instead, when users make requests for information, their key is embedded within the request message, which the server then calculates and computes a digital signature to verify. Digital signatures are also useful in the digital world of software and programs. For instance, when a user types a line of text into a program, the program can perform a digital signature to authenticate the user's identity. In order to make digital signatures work, a user makes a copy of an important document such as a tax return or contract, and then digitally signs it using a digital signature tool. The user then stores this digitally signed document at an online digital signature site. The online digital signing service acts as a liaison between the user and the IRS. When a taxpayer signs a document such as a tax return, a record is created at the digital signature site that now contains the digitally signed signature of the taxpayer. The digital signature ensures that the identity of the sender does not become publicly known. As soon as someone knows that the sender is the one who sent a letter without an envelope (the digital signature was used as the identity of the sender), there is a high probability that the recipient will assume that the sender is the person who wrote the letter.
